Don’t live life in the cold this winter! Avoid making these heating mistakes and you’ll stay toasty warm without having to worry about outrageous energy bills.
Don’t Heat an Empty House
This seems pretty straightforward and obvious, but it can be easy to forget to adjust the thermostat on your way out the door. On the bright side, if you upgrade to a programmable thermostat, you’ll be able to set your thermostat to run during specific hours during the week and to shut off during other hours. A step up even further would be installing a smart thermostat that you can connect to your phone. With a smart thermostat, you can still program the thermostat, but you can also turn it on and off from your cell phone, even if you’re across the country.
Space Heaters
Space heaters are great, especially when you have a specific location you need heated. However, they can be a bit dangerous to operate if not done so properly. Make sure that before you turn your space heater on, you read all of the labels and instructions, keep a radius of about 3 feet of space around your heater to prevent fire hazards, and never leave it plugged in when you’re not in the room.
Don’t Crank the Thermostat
No one likes walking into the house and realizing it’s just as cold inside as it was outside, but don’t make the mistake of cranking the thermostat up to 90 degrees. While it seems like this might speed up the heating process, it won’t. It will just make your heater work harder and longer trying to reach that desired temperature.
