If spring cleaning is a tradition in your home, you soon may be shaking out rugs, putting away winter bedding and organizing your garage. Another item that surely should make your list is HVAC spring cleaning. You’ll help keep your cooling bills lower and HVAC system purring until summer’s end.
Clean the Air Vents
Clean away the dust and debris from the supply and return air vents in your home. This is easily accomplished using the brush extension on your vacuum cleaner or with a damp cloth. For the best results, remove the supply air vents and clean behind them.
Check the A/C Unit
The A/C unit located outside your home tends to collect leaves, sticks and debris if left uncovered through the winter. Turn the thermostat to OFF. Place tape over the thermostat so that no one unknowingly turns on the A/C while your are cleaning it. Additionally, flip the A/C’s circuit breaker or unplug the disconnect switch near the outside unit.
- Remove larger debris by hand
- Use a garden hose to wash off the unit.
- Pull up any weeds around the unit.
Change the Filter
The air filter is a simple, yet vital component of your HVAC system. A dirty filter will actually increase energy bills, allow dirt to build up on components, reduce cooling efficiency and damage equipment.
Humidity Control Systems
Many homeowners in central New Jersey use humidifiers during the heating months to add moisture to dry indoor air. If you have a whole-house humidifier connected to your HVAC system, check to see if there is a duct connected to the side of it. If so, see if there is a damper that can be closed to prevent the re-circulation of air. This needs to be closed in the summer and open in the winter.
For permanent ceramic panels, clean away deposits and debris with mild soap, water and a non-abrasive scouring pad. For disposable filters, throw it away and don’t replace it until next fall.
Schedule Professional Maintenance
Put a star by “professional maintenance” on your HVAC spring cleaning checklist. Annual professional maintenance will help your HVAC system last longer, prevent break downs leading to replacement, and maximize energy efficiency.
