Hurrah! March has arrived. And in our little part of New Jersey, this is exciting because it means we are one step closer to spring. So, let us ask you this: What does spring signify to you? Do you envision shades of green this month? Do you think of shamrocks, leprechauns, greener lawns?
These are all very normal thoughts to ponder as March unfolds. But did you know there are many ways to “go green?” If you’re a homeowner, you can “go green” this spring by following certain tips to protect your home. It’s just one small way to help celebrate our upcoming Earth Day on April 22.
Ready to make the world a better place? Here are six home tips for going green and honoring Mother Earth this season.
1. Improve Your Indoor Air
Did you know that your indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air? Yikes! Get that fresh air circulating inside your home by opening windows on days that are seasonable. Your HVAC system will thank you because it runs more efficiently when there is cleaner air circulating. Of course, for the cleanest indoor air, installing an indoor air quality system can do wonders—especially for family members who suffer from allergies or asthma.
2. Consider a Home Energy Assessment
Many utility companies offer free home energy assessments for customers. A professional evaluation of your home’s energy use can help you determine where you are using the most energy and how you can use less. Contact your utility company to see what services they offer and how you can save money.
3. Recycle Your Stuff
Global Recycling Day lands on March 18 this year. On this day, you can do your part to help the cause! Recycle items around the house (plastic, paper, etc.) and help the world reduce its waste. To learn more about the importance of recycling and how you can support the Global Recycling initiative, visit their website.
4. Upgrade Your HVAC System
How old is your HVAC system? If it’s over 10 years old, you may be paying more money and using more energy than necessary. Newer HVAC systems are designed to be extremely energy efficient and can help you save energy and money! When the time comes for a replacement, be sure you invest in one that is both energy efficient and properly fitted to your home’s space. As always, Elite Air can help you with this.
5. Turn Off the Lights
Pardon us if we sound like your parents right now but turn off the lights when they aren’t being used! Also, switch out incandescent lightbulbs for LED lightbulbs to help cut down on energy use. There is even an annual event that honors saving electricity and turning out the lights. Join in this nationwide event called Earth Hour on March 25 at 8:30 pm (your local time) and spend 60 minutes “switching off” while doing something positive for the planet.
6. Ditch the Harsh Cleaners
Just say no to harsh chemicals and cleaners with strong odors. Instead, consider switching to plant-based cleaners with essential oils for those non-porous surfaces. Natural, plant-based cleaners are better for your indoor air, your pets, and you!
