Have you heard the latest news? According to CNN, July had the hottest global day on record—ever. Specifically, July’s heat records have reportedly been the warmest in over 100,000 years, with triple digit temperatures causing massive heatwaves across the planet. With such brutally hot weather, what’s a homeowner to do?
When extreme weather hits, there are plenty of things that can go awry. From power outages and heat-related illnesses to dehydration and the need for emergency AC repair, the fallout is plentiful. But don’t sweat it (sorry we couldn’t resist that)! To prevent the negative effects of extreme hot weather, the team at Elite Air is offering some totally chill ways you can remain cool, calm, and collected.
Stay Cool During a Heatwave
New Jersey has been pretty hot these last few weeks, but our temperatures are nothing compared to the temperatures we’re seeing in Arizona, California, and Las Vegas. So, we should be grateful for that! But when things get sticky and overheated, we all look for little tricks to stay extra cool inside our homes. Here are six.
1. Turn on those ceiling fans.
Ceiling fans offer a cooling effect that provides good relief. Turn yours counterclockwise in the summer to help push cooler air straight down into your living space. For best results, keep the fan on low, rather than high.
2. Check the seals on doors and windows.
The last thing you want to do in the middle of a heat wave is let cool air escape your home. If you’re noticing a warm spot, check that your windows are locked and that areas are sealed along your doorframe. If cool air is escaping, it’s time to reseal!
3. Keep rooms dark.
Keep those blinds and drapes closed during a heat spell. This helps block out the heat that can warm up your indoor space. For even more sunblock, consider window tinting films or even solar shades. Some films can block out up to 85% of the sun’s heat!
4. Grab an ice pack.
Feeling overheated? To alleviate heatstroke symptoms, the National Library of Medicine recommends placing icepacks against the wrist, neck, armpits, and groin to help lower body temperatures.
5. Schedule an AC tune-up.
The best way to ensure that your cooling system is working efficiently is through a regular cooling tune-up. While these appointments are best scheduled in the spring before the weather heats up, it never hurts to schedule our team for an HVAC maintenance check at any point in the year. It’s simply the smartest way to avoid emergency AC repair. Need a check? Schedule an appointment online.
6. Hydrate properly.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t forget to keep drinking water or sports drinks throughout a heatwave. Staying hydrated is a great way to help cool your core body temperature. And don’t wait to drink until you’re thirsty. If you do, that’s a sign you’re already dehydrated.
