Whether March comes in like a lion or goes out like lamb, there’s some things we know it will bring—thoughts of leprechauns, greener lawns, and the hope of spring renewals. Plus, considering that it’s closing in on St. Patrick’s Day, we also hope it’s filled with plenty of luck!
In the spirit of this Irish holiday, we’re offering ten lucky ways you can make your home feel like a rainbow of comfort this spring. To keep your luck from running out, here are our top spring cleaning tips to keep your home’s heating and cooling system safe and sound.
1. Clean the supply vents.
Your supply vents have had an entire winter of collecting dust and other grime, so it’s time to for a good cleaning. Start with an inspection of vent registers and be sure that rugs or furniture aren’t blocking them. Next, remove the vent cover and vacuum thoroughly. Replace covers carefully. Keeping your supply vents clean is a great way to help prevent unwanted HVAC service!
2. Wipe down ceiling fan blades.
Unless you look up, you can easily forget how dusty those ceiling blades can get. Once you’re certain the fan is off, take a damp cloth and carefully wipe down blades on both sides. You can also try this hack: Take an old pillowcase and place the open end over the blades. Pull the case over the blades and let the dust fall into the pillowcase opening!
3. Run the fan.
Now that your blades are clean, run the ceiling fan to move stagnant air and ensure it’s working properly. On nice days, open the windows and let the fan and fresh air combine forces to move the air around.
4. Check your thermostat.
If your thermostat has batteries, replace them with a fresh set. If you haven’t already purchased a programmable thermostat, now’s the time. These devices are a great way to boost your energy efficiency and improve home savings.
5. Clean around outdoor AC unit
Fall and winter can leave debris and clutter surrounding your outdoor AC unit. Be sure to clean around the area and leave a good two-foot clearance surrounding it. Remove, branches, dried leaves, twigs, and other junk that has collected.
6. Test your AC system.
Yes, we know it’s not warm enough yet to turn on your cooling system for the season. But in a few months, you’re going to need it. So, it’s a good idea to test the system now, so you aren’t surprised in June. Of course, if you’ve scheduled your spring HVAC tune-up with one of our pros, you’re already two steps ahead!
7. Test CO2 detectors and smoke alarms
A quick test of both your smoke alarm system and your carbon monoxide detector will ensure peace of mind each season. An easy way to remember to do a test, is to schedule it at the same time you alter clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
8. Wipe down venetian blinds
The slats of your venetian blinds get very dirty. If you haven’t cleaned them this season, you should. Mix a mild dish soap with water and wipe down with a paper towel or hand towel. Getting rid of the dust that accumulates will also help alleviate the work your air purifier must do!
9. Clean refrigerator coils
Here’s a little-known fact: Refrigerator coils can get dirty. Too much dirt can cause the motor to work overtime and waste efficiency. If you are experienced in cleaning them, great. If not, ask one of our pros about cleaning them when you schedule your next HVAC tune-up!
10. Check in with your generator.
Do you have a generator for your house? If so, spring is a great time to check it’s working properly. Ensuring that your generator is in top working order can bring peace of mind when those spring thunderstorms pop up!
