Now that 2023 has finally arrived, the reality of the government’s new energy efficiency changes will really start to take effect. Not up to date on the latest energy regulations? No problem. We’ve gathered all the information you need to know about the new SEER2 changes, and we promise to do our best to help you understand these new requirements.
What is SEER2 and What Does It Mean for Homeowners?
The first thing homeowners will need to understand is the term SEER and what it means. SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio, and it is a measurement of efficiency given to your home comfort equipment such as heat pumps and central air conditioners. The higher the SEER number of your system, the less energy you will use and the more money you should save.

The Changes
As of January 1, the Department of Energy (DOE) has mandated changes in efficiency of units and is changing the way HVAC systems are tested. These new regulations are being called SEER2. The goal is that the new testing conditions will provide better data and metrics and more accurately report how a newly installed HVAC system performs.
How Will SEER2 Affect You?
The good news is, if you purchase a new heat pump or central air conditioning system this year, you’ll most likely be getting a new SEER2 system—which means you’ll get greater efficiency in your home and save money on utility bills!
The new SEER2 requirements do vary from region to region. The current SEER and new SEER2 ratings are outlined in the chart below[MB1] :
