Spring brings warmer temperatures to Central New Jersey, and with that, we see things start to green up. The less than happy side of this is spring allergy symptoms also begin. Here are some allergy tips for reducing oak pollen, ragweed pollen, mold spores and other common springtime allergens within your home in order to keep your family healthier.
Get Your HVAC System Tuned Up
Consider your HVAC system to be the lungs of the home. When it is clean and working well, then your air quality will be improved. Your contractor can ensure hard-to-reach components are cleaned and can advise you on the best allergen reducing filters to use.
Have Your Ductwork Checked
Ductwork that has holes or cracks is letting contaminants in that could wind up in your home. Have a contractor examine ductwork and make repairs. You should also consider scheduling duct cleaning if it has been several years since you have done so.
Control Indoor Humidity
Along with warmer air, spring brings higher humidity to our area and causes problems for anyone sensitive to molds. Aside from HVAC maintenance, one of the most important things to keep mold spores to a minimum indoors is to keep indoor humidity low. In some cases, running the A/C is not enough and you must take additional measures such as:
- Keeping windows closed on humid days
- Using fans to dry the air
- Using a dehumidifier
- Using your exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom after bathing or cooking
- Dumping water from houseplant trays after watering plants
- Avoiding running the washer or dishwasher during the heat of the day
Clean with Allergens in Mind
Pollen, dust and mold spores can enter the home every time a door is opened and they can even travel in on clothing and shoes. It is almost impossible to keep all allergens outside, and so you must keep up with household cleaning. Carpets, upholstery and other textiles, such as bedding, tend to be a magnet for allergens, so vacuum and clean these frequently.
